The Guardian Gorilla Throw: a bold and gentle design inspired by quiet strength.

Some designs hold more meaning than meets the eye, and the Guardian Gorilla Throw is one of them. Inspired by my nephew Danny—a fiercely protective, intelligent, and loving soul—this throw blends strength and gentleness in a design as bold as it is comforting. Danny has faced many challenges in life, but his loyalty and kindness to those he loves are unwavering. I wanted to create something that mirrored those traits, and the powerful yet gentle nature of a gorilla felt like the perfect fit. Danny loved it, and I hope you will too.

Subtle Design with a Bold Presence

The hardest part of creating this pattern wasn’t the design process itself—my method is straightforward—but finding the right image that captured both power and tenderness. The finished throw uses black and grey tones to create a subtle image that complements any space. These neutral colors make it a great fit for masculine decor, though knitters can easily personalize it with any two contrasting colors to make the design pop. Whether you prefer the understated elegance of black and grey or want to experiment with bold colors, this pattern offers flexibility.

Knitting Details and Tips

The Guardian Gorilla Throw follows a clear color chart, making it accessible for knitters familiar with double knitting. Because double knitting creates two layers of fabric at once, it’s essential to carefully track your progress. I recommend using a knitting program or crossing off rows on a printed pattern to stay on track. Special attention should be given when joining the sides—this step brings the two layers together for a polished, cohesive finish.

No Twist, Slip Stitch Edging for Double Knitting

  1. Work to 2 stitches before the end of the row (1 knit, 1 purl). Both yarns will be in front because the last stitch was worked as a purl.

  2. A. Bring the knit-colored yarn to the back and slip the knit stitch purlwise. With the purl color in front, slip the purl stitch purlwise. Turn the work.

  3. B. At the start of the next row, the yarns will be separated: the knit color is behind, and the purl color is in front. Knit the knit stitch with its color and purl the purl stitch with its color.

  4. C. Continue working the row, moving the yarns together as you approach the last two stitches.

This method helps create a neat, seamless edge that finishes the throw beautifully.

Practical and Thoughtful Yarn Choices

I chose 100% acrylic yarn for this throw, usually Red Heart Comfort. Acrylic is not only budget-friendly but also easy to wash and dry without worrying about felting. Throws and blankets are meant to be used and loved, and acrylic stands up to regular use. Many people today aren’t familiar with how to care for wool, so acrylic makes this project more approachable. Of course, if you prefer wool or other fibers, this pattern can be adapted to suit any two contrasting yarns that match the recipient’s decor.

A Gift with Purpose

The Guardian Gorilla Throw is as versatile as it is meaningful. Whether you knit it as a statement piece for home decor, a thoughtful gift, or a cozy personal throw, it carries a story of quiet strength and deep love. I designed this piece for my nephew, but it can just as easily become a symbol of comfort and protection for someone you care about.
